Filing

Today I trudged up the steps of the state capital in Frankfort, plunked down 500 bucks, and filed my papers to enter the May 16th Democratic primary for the 3rd District U.S. Congress. The fact that an ordinary citizen like me can do such an audacious thing is one reason why we live in a great country. On the way to Frankfort I passed a semi truck owned by Covenant Transport - in the same lettering as their logo was a sign on the trailer that read, "It is not a choice - It is a child." I parked my car behind a Toyota Prius that sported three bumper stickers: "Keep Abortion Legal," "Kill your television," and "My country invaded Iraq and all I got was this expensive gas."

After I filed, I called my 81-year old mother in Paducah to tell her what I had done. "Good," she said. "You should listen to Rush Limbaugh." This is going to be tougher than I thought.
